Top Tastes in California

By Kenesha Hylton, Foodie

Summer is only one week away … it’s time for fairs, fun and food! Usually during the summer I like to hit the Orange County Fair, as well as the San Diego Fair (which I still call the Del Mar Fair – it’s hard to convert from childhood) and sample all of the yummy (and weird!) food offerings. I hope you’ve been getting ready for the summer because here are the top Ten Tastes in California:

  1. Taste of Newport- Every year the people in OC gather to pay tribute to the wonderful places to eat in the neighborhood. Check it ouwww.tasteofnewport.com
  2. Taste of Temecula – Known as the new Napa of Southern California, Temecula is fast becoming a culinary dream. See what I mean www.tasteoftemecula.net
  3. Taste of Downtown San Diego- You have not been to San Diego if you have not visited the Gaslamp District and ate at one of the lovely restaurants. http://www.downtownsandiego.org/index.cfm/fuseaction/events.home

The Slam: Skateboarding x Sustainability

By Chrissy Gray, event planner

On June 27th, The Slam is coming to Volcom Skatepark in Costa Mesa. With a mix of skateboarding, environmental stewardship, and live music this event is sure to have something for everyone! The Slam was originally designed around a skate competition that would include local amateurs and national pros. As the event progressed however, combining environmental elements into the mix just made sense. The entire event is going to be powered by solar and bio-diesel, all foodware items will be recyclable and/or compostable, educational materials will be visible throughout, electronics can be brought and recycled at the event, and all waste will be recycled and composted with nothing going to the landfill!

Notable OC bands such as The Crowd, Channel 3, and the Hindu Pirates will be performing live throughout the day, while DJ’s spin for the contest. There will be an area specifically for younger guests with multiple bounce houses, face painting, and an interactive animal exhibit. Various food and merchandise vendors will be present, as well as Create-A-Skate.

The is a FREE event from 11am-8pm. Bring your entire family for a day of fun and sun!!

The Week Ahead 6.14

By Chrissy Gray, Event Planner

Tired of the same old boring routine? Check out The Week Ahead in So Cal and bring a little spice back to your life.

Monday 6.14

The New Limb in San Diego. The Costa Mesa indie rock band is heading down south to play at the Soda Bar on El Cajon Blvd.  Cover is only 3 bucks and DJ Oldboy will be spinning throughout the evening.

Tuesday 6.15

Spirits and Headhunters: Art of the Pacific Islands in Santa Ana. Boasting over 150 unique pieces including masks, tools of the shaman, weapons, and currency, this fantastic exhibit is at the Bower’s Museum until December. Yes, I know you’re thinking that you have plenty of time to go, but if you’re a Santa Ana resident you get in free today, so stop procrastinating and check it out this week.

Wednesday 6.16

Kombucha Kamp in Los Angeles. If you’re like me and could easily get hooked to GT’s Kombucha if it weren’t for the $3.50 per bottle price tag, now you can learn to make it yourself. I went to the class several years ago, and trust me, Hannah is the Kombucha master – you’ll leave with lots of info and a starter kit to begin making your own flavored Kombucha for a fraction of the price.

Thursday 6.17

OC Green Drinks in Irvine. With the hiatus last month it’s been entirely too long since one of my favorite green get-together’s. Lucky for me (and you!) this month Green Drinks is headed over to Andrei’s Conscious Cuisine. So along with hanging out with the cool eco crowd that actually does exist in the OC, you can also munch on tasty organic appetizers and delicious cocktails.

Friday 6.18

The Cool Kids and Kids in the Hall in Pomona. The “leaders of the new old school” duo from Chicago will be joined by the Kidz in the Hall at the Glass House for what I’m sure will be an evening of some great hip hop.

Saturday 6.19

Pick of the Week

Frugal Festival Summer Swap in North Hollywood. Join hundreds of “swapaholics” for the annual clothing and houseware swap at the NoHo Performing Arts Center. For only $5 (or $10 if you want VIP early entrance) take part in the best clothing/houseware recycling event I’ve heard of in So Cal. If you love thrift stores, you don’t wanna miss this.

Sunday 6.20

It’s Dad’s Day! Spend some time with Pops at the beach, in your backyard, or at the park. Get outside…it’s gonna be a beautiful day!
