How Does Your Garden Grow?

By Chrissy Gray, Event Planner

Saturday looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day here in So Cal so what better way to spend the morning/afternoon then out in the sun, getting your hands a little dirty? If you’re in to gardening, maintaining a sustainable backyard, or simply like to get out in the community and meet new, fun people I definitely suggest you check out both of these events on Saturday.

First, UC Irvine is unveiling their yet to be named, completely student run, community garden beginning at 9:30am. The festivities include breakfast, speakers, and free surprises for the first 500 people – yep, you read correctly, 500! Something tells me this is going to be a pretty big event! The garden is still in need of raised planter beds, signs, and much more, so head down and help get this beautiful garden growing.

Next, head south to The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano. At 1pm they’ll be presenting their first DIY Backyard Skills class of the year. The workshops are designed to highlight creative strategies and solutions that foster sustainability in our everyday lives and take place on the first Saturday of every month. February’s class will teach you various methods of water purification, including sand filtration. The cost is $25 plus $15 for materials.

February Resolutions: Detox in a Cup

By Chrissy Gray, Event Planner

I’ve never really been one for New Years resolutions – I mean, come on, how many people do you know that actually stick to them? What does appeal to me however, are small goals that I can make throughout the year. To me, it seems just as important in May or September or any other month to make a resolution, right? So a couple girlfriends and I decided February would be a great time to start a juice fast. After considering the possible obstacles to our success – such as Super Bowl Sunday Shenanigans – we decided this Monday will be Day 1 of Operation Juice.

Juice fasting has tons of health benefits, such as breaking down toxin build-up, pumping your system full of living enzymes, and allowing your digestive system to take a much needed break. What I love most about cleansing though, is how rejuvenated and full of energy I feel once I get over the “hump.” Yes, the first couple of days can be miserable – our bodies are literally addicted to food – but if you can make through the pain, the reward is amazing!

If you’re feeling inspired to try, here’s my favorite juicing combo that I suggest trying out: Kale, Spinach, Parsley, Apple, Lemon, and Ginger, with a sprinkle of Cayenne Pepper (great for reving up your metabolism!) If you’re not lucky enough to own a Jack LaLanne Juicer like myself, check out your local health food store – like Mother’s Market here in Orange County. Juice bars have been popping up all over the place!
